“Once again, the European Union’s privacy authorities have halted the rollout of Meta AI and forced X to stop training its Grok chatbot on European users’ data. Now, they are also investigating Google for its AI practices. The Irish Data Protection Commission, the lead EU privacy regulator, is looking into whether Google conducted a data protection impact assessment before deploying its PaLM 2 large language model last year. This is a relatively minor action, but it highlights the importance of complying with the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) for all AI companies. With Meta, X, and Google all facing GDPR issues, it’s clear that European regulation is a major concern for the AI sector. And with the upcoming AI Act, which will bring in even more rules, it’s important for companies to stay compliant. On a separate note, this is my last essay for Data Sheet, as it will be adopting a new format on Monday. The new Data Sheet will be more concise and summarize the day’s top tech stories, making it the only tech newsletter you’ll need to read in the morning.”
